Jon Spaihts, the screenwriter of Dune, suggested that a third film could possibly see the light of day during an interview for the site The Playlist.
A universe under construction
The story traces the life of Paul Atre ides (Timothée Chalamet), his mother Dame Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and their encounter with the Fremen. One of them will stand out, Chani (Zendaya) whom Paul has seen several times in these visions.
Dune is an adaptation of the novel by Frank Herbert published in 1965. Denis Villeneuve’s film only evokes the first part of the first book. The universe is made up of six novels, including The Messiah of Dune, and The Children of Dune which make up the sequel, and they attract the attention of the team.
In the sequel, Paul and Chani unite to wage a war against the Harkonnen and the forces of the Emperor. The second film should focus on this episode. However, the film’s screenwriter says he’s not only working on Dune 2:
“I’m currently working on Dune 2, but not only that
but also, on other projects for the cinema, which are much talked about. But I’m not allowed to say much more. It’s a very rich world to play in, and I think it presents a lot of opportunities, new stories, in several directions.”
Jon Spaihts supports Denis de Villeneuve’s idea of extending the saga:
“Denis seriously mentioned “The Messiah of Dune, which could be the conclusion of a trilogy.
I think so, there are seductive impulses towards the future which suggest that we are not finished with this universe. Even if the end of the novel “Dune”, which will also be the end of the second film, is a very satisfying conclusion.”
A series project
The screenwriter was initially the showrunner of the Dune: The Sisterhood series, but he had to step down to focus on the Dune film projects. The television series is expected to focus on the Bene Gesserit, and it is already in development. The second film is scheduled to shoot this summer, with new actors such as Florence Pugh and Austin Butler. The official release is for October 18,2024.
